Castanyada

otoño4

Last week we were in Dublin visiting the grandparents so we could not celebrate the Castanyada holiday. However, we had some friends over today and we decided that we could celebrate it all together even if it was a week later.

Catalonia celebrates the autum season with the Castanyada holiday where families observe the ancient tradition by eating chestnuts, panellets (almond pastries) and sweet potatoes and drinking sweet wine. This festivity is closely related to Christian holiday of All Saints Day. Back in time,  and it is a festive day where children share this food (not the wine!!) with their classmates and where families gather to celebrate the autumnal season.

It seems that the tradition of eating these high-energy-food comes from the fact that during the night of October 31 (the night of the dead according to Christian tradition) the church bells were ringing all night in memory of the dead and ringers used to eat this food to last until dawn.

And you, how do you celebrate this day?
